Discover more about Sisteron Citadel

The Citadel of Sisteron, a classified historical monument, stands majestically overlooking the Durance valley, a strategic passage between Provence and the Dauphiné. For centuries, this rocky spur has been recognized for its strategic importance. The Romans were the first to fortify the site, laying the foundations for the defensive structure that has evolved over time. The oldest visible traces date back to the Middle Ages, including a keep and walkway from the 12th and 13th centuries. Ramparts that can still be admired today date back to the 14th century. In the 17th century, Vauban, the military engineer of Louis XIV, designed plans to modernize and strengthen the fortress. In the 19th century, an underground staircase was carved into the rock, connecting the citadel to the town below. Visitors can explore bastions and towers while enjoying views stretching over 150 km. The site spans 10 hectares, reflecting eight centuries of history and architecture. The Citadel has been restored after sustaining heavy damage from bombing in August 1944. Inside, discover a museum with a room dedicated to Napoleon's visit, and a film, “Citadelle, ship of men…”. The open-air Théàtre de verdure on the north flank of the citadel rock hosts the Nuits de la Citadelle summer music festival every July and August.
