Established in 1781 by baker M. Aveyrous on Rue Sainte, the ancient 'via sacra' leading to Abbaye Saint-Victor, Le Four des Navettes is Marseille's oldest bakery. The Imbert family—Jean-Claude and son Nicolas—guards the secret navette recipe passed down through three owners over 240 years. This cultural landmark holds labels like Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant, Fabriqué à Marseille, and awards including the Médaille d’Or de l’Exposition Internationale de Paris.

The Iconic Navette

Shaped like the boat of the Saintes Maries, navettes are baked exclusively in a late-18th-century vaulted oven still in use. Scented with orange blossom, they start crisp, soften over time, and last a year without losing quality. Blessed annually at Chandeleur near Saint-Victor, they symbolize Provençal pilgrimage traditions, luring pilgrims with their floral fragrance before Vieux-Port views.

Beyond navettes, discover pompes à l'huile—brioche-like treats with olive oil and orange blossom for Noël's thirteen desserts—moist gibassiers coated in sugar, mini-calissons blending almonds and candied fruits, marseillotes with nougat and chocolate, canistrelli in anise, orange, or lemon, croquants, almond macarons, nougats, and vin cuit.
