Discover more about Château de Carol

Château de Carol, perched on a rocky outcrop in Porta, stands as a silent witness to centuries of history in the Pyrénées-Orientales. While the site was mentioned as early as 1011, the castle itself appears in records from 1243, linked to James I of Aragon. Its towers, constructed in the 12th or 13th century, and the subsequent enclosure, formed a key part of the Cerdagne's defense system, controlled by the Baron of Enveitg. Strategically positioned to control the Carol Valley, the castle was part of a network of fortifications along the river, including the Cerdane tower and the Carol tower. Throughout its history, Château de Carol has been under the control of various rulers, including the Kings of Majorca and Aragon, and was even occupied by French forces in the 15th century. The castle's importance diminished after the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, leading to its demolition by the French to prevent its use by the Spanish. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Château de Carol, including its two prominent square towers and sections of the old walls. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and a tangible connection to the region's medieval past. Though largely in ruins, the castle was registered as a historical monument in 1927, and the crenellations of the west tower were consolidated in 1985. Exploring the castle grounds provides a tranquil escape with the serene sounds of nature.
