Discover more about Chateau De Miglos

Château de Miglos, also known as Château d'Arquizat, stands as a testament to the region's medieval heritage. Located in the commune of Miglos, this ruined castle overlooks the Vicdessos Valley in the Ariège department of Occitanie, France. Originally built in the 12th century, with significant restoration in 1320, the castle served as a crucial defensive structure for the County of Foix. Its strategic location allowed for communication with other fortifications, including the Château de Montréal-de-Sos, Château de Quié, Château de Génat, and the fort at Castel Merle, through a signaling system. The castle's history is intertwined with the Cathar cause, as the lord of Miglos, Arnaud de Miglos, was convicted of heresy and imprisoned for supporting the besieged Montségur in 1244. Over the centuries, the castle passed through various noble families. However, it was razed in the 17th century by Cardinal Richelieu and further damaged during the French Revolution. Despite its ruined state, the Château de Miglos was classified as a historic monument in 1987, recognizing its historical importance and architectural layout. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, including the remains of the keep and the northwest tower, which were reinforced through restoration projects. The Association of the Friends of the Château de Miglos organizes events and restoration work, ensuring the preservation of this important historical site.
