Discover more about Le Petit Train Jaune

Le Petit Train Jaune, a symbol of the Pyrénées-Orientales, has been charming travelers for over a century. This narrow-gauge railway, also known as the Ligne de Cerdagne, connects Villefranche-de-Conflent to Latour-de-Carol-Enveitg, traversing 63 kilometers of breathtaking Pyrenean scenery. The train's history dates back to 1903 when construction began to link the Cerdagne region with the Roussillon plain. The line was designed to provide essential transport and support the local economy. The first section opened in 1910, with the full line completed in 1927. The project included impressive engineering feats such as the Séjourné Bridge and the Gisclard Bridge. Paul Séjourné, from the national Roads and Bridges Department, designed the bridges. The train derives its power from hydroelectric generators along the Têt River. The electricity is supplied via a third rail at 850 volts DC. The train climbs to an altitude of 1,593 meters, making it one of the highest railways in Europe. A ride on Le Petit Train Jaune offers panoramic views of mountains, forests, and picturesque villages. Open-air carriages are available during the summer months. The journey provides access to hiking trails, cultural sites, and local markets.
