Discover more about Montreal de sos

Château de Montréal-de-Sos, perched atop a rocky outcrop in Auzat, France, offers a captivating journey through history and breathtaking views of the Vicdessos valley. This site, occupied since the Bronze Age, evolved into an Iron Age oppidum and later became a strategic Carolingian fortress. During the Cathar period, it rose to prominence as one of the most powerful castles in the Foix region. Built in the 13th century, the castle was a key stronghold of the Counts of Foix. Its strategic location allowed it to dominate the iron market of Vicdessos and oversee mining activities in Sem. The fortress was dismantled in the early 15th century by the Counts of Foix. Today, archaeological excavations reveal remnants of enclosure walls, towers and an aristocratic neighborhood. Visitors can explore the castle ruins and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The site also holds mystical significance due to its proximity to caves with paintings linked to Catharism. Legend has it that the Holy Grail was hidden in a cave beneath the castle. An orientation table near the ruins helps visitors identify villages in the upper Vicdessos valley.
