Discover more about Musée-Hôtel Le Vergeur

The Musée-Hôtel Le Vergeur, located on Place du Forum in Reims, provides a captivating glimpse into the lives of the city's elite from the Middle Ages through the early 20th century. The building itself is a historical monument, comprised of structures dating back to the 13th and 16th centuries. Originally a patrician residence in a neighborhood of wealthy merchants, it was transformed in the 16th century by Nicolas Le Vergeur into a grand private house with Renaissance-style interior facades arranged around a courtyard. In 1910, Hugues Krafft, a passionate traveler and collector, acquired the property with the aim of preserving its historical character. After the First World War, during which the building was badly damaged, Krafft meticulously restored the Hôtel Le Vergeur, showcasing his extensive collections of furniture, art objects, clothing, and photographic plates gathered from his travels around the world. Upon his death, Krafft bequeathed his collections to the Société des Amis du Vieux Reims, who then opened the Musée-Hôtel Le Vergeur to the public. The museum's collections feature a diverse array of historical pieces, including furniture, decorative arts, and personal belongings. Highlights include the complete, original series of engravings of the Apocalypse and the Great Passion by Albrecht Dürer. Visitors can explore various rooms, such as the lounges, dining room, kitchen, bedrooms, and bathroom, each offering a glimpse into the daily life of a bourgeois family. The garden also features salvaged facades, forming a unique architectural promenade.
