Place Aristide Briand: A Serene Square in Reims

Place Aristide Briand, located in Reims, is a square with a rich history. Situated on the site of the ancient Roman gate Cérès, it has been a significant location throughout the city's development. In 1765, it was known as Esplanade Coquebert, later becoming Esplanade Cérès in 1841, a name that persisted even after 1870. The square is named after Aristide Briand (1862-1932), a French statesman and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Briand served as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, advocating for reconciliation between France and Germany after World War I. A notable feature of the square is the monument in homage to the nurses of the world, erected in 1924 following an international subscription led by Juliette Adam. The monument, designed by architect Charles Giraud and sculptor Denys Puech, stands as a tribute to the nurses who sacrificed their lives during wartime. The monument is a cylindrical column topped with an urn on an octagonal plinth, with engravings honoring nurses from allied nations.
