In 1765, it was known as Esplanade Coquebert, later becoming Esplanade Cérès in 1841, a name that persisted even after 1870.
The square is named after Aristide Briand (1862-1932), a French statesman and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Briand served as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, advocating for reconciliation between France and Germany after World War I.
A notable feature of the square is the monument in homage to the nurses of the world, erected in 1924 following an international subscription led by Juliette Adam.
