Discover more about Jardins de la Ballue

Nestled in the rolling countryside near Bazouges-la-Pérouse, the Jardins de la Ballue offer a mesmerizing journey through meticulously designed landscapes. Inspired by Baroque Italy, the gardens were initially laid out in the 17th century alongside the Château de la Ballue. The gardens fell into disrepair but were revived in the late 20th century by landscape architects Paul Maymont & François Hebert Stevens, who reinterpreted the original vision with a contemporary twist. The gardens are divided into distinct sections, each offering a unique atmosphere. A geometric garden, reminiscent of classic French design, sits adjacent to the château with precisely arranged triangles of boxwood and sculpted yew trees. A wisteria-covered arcade, supported by yew columns, separates this area from a more whimsical, Italian-inspired garden. This section features a labyrinth of paths, creating a sense of mystery and discovery as visitors move from sunlight to shadow. Within the gardens, visitors will find thirteen 'green rooms,' each with its own distinct theme and character. Contemporary sculptures are placed throughout the gardens, adding an element of surprise and artistic flair. The lower area, nestled within the old moats, features ponds, a zen garden, and a botanical collection of boxwood. The Château de la Ballue itself has a rich history, having been built around 1620 by Gilles Ruellan. Over the centuries, it has welcomed notable figures like Balzac, Victor Hugo, and Châteaubriand. Today, the château offers upscale guest rooms and hosts cultural events, particularly during the spring and summer.
