Getting There

  • Car

    The Grotte de Choranche is located off the D531 road. From Grenoble or Valence, allow approximately one hour of driving time. From A49, take exit 9 (Saint-Marcellin) if coming from Grenoble, or exit 8 (Baume d'Hostun) if coming from Valence, then follow signs to Pont-en-Royans, Villard-de-Lans, and finally Gorges de la Bourne. Follow the road to the cave. There is a free parking area at the entrance of the site. Be aware that during peak tourist season, the access road can experience heavy traffic between 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM.

  • Public Transport

    The nearest train station to Grotte de Choranche is Saint-Marcellin, approximately 25 km away. From there, you can take a bus (route 5000) or a taxi to reach the caves. Check local bus schedules for accurate timings and connections. Taxi fares from Saint-Marcellin to Choranche will vary, expect to pay approximately €50-€70.

The cave is particularly known for its fistulous stalactites, also called soda straws, which are long, hollow, and incredibly delicate formations that can reach over three meters in length. These unique structures, appearing like a fine white lace curtain, are a highlight of the visit.The tour also introduces visitors to the Proteus anguinus, or olm, a fascinating, blind cave salamander that calls the Grotte de Choranche home. Originally from Slovenia, these unique creatures have adapted to the cave's dark environment and can live for up to 80 years. The experience culminates in the Cathedral Chamber, where a colorful sound and light show illuminates the cave's impressive scale and natural beauty.
