Discover more about Château de Robert le Diable

The Château de Robert le Diable, or Robert the Devil's Castle, is a French feudal castle with origins dating back to the time of the Dukes of Normandy. Situated in Moulineaux, near Rouen, in the Seine-Maritime department, the castle occupies a strategic position overlooking the Seine valley. The site's history is rich and complex. A medieval stronghold stood here during the time of ducal Normandy. The fortress was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, witnessing the passage of historical figures like John Lackland and Philip Augustus. The castle owes its current medieval silhouette to Lucien Lefort, a disciple of Viollet-le-Duc, who rebuilt it in the 20th century. The site has been classified as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture since 1935. The castle is shrouded in legend, most notably the tale of Robert the Devil. According to the legend, the wife of a Duke of Normandy, unable to conceive, sought the Devil's help. Their pact resulted in the birth of Robert, a cruel and terrifying figure who terrorized the Norman countryside. However, Robert later repented and embarked on a journey of penitence, becoming a valiant fighter before ultimately choosing the life of a hermit. Today, visitors can explore the castle grounds and delve into its captivating history and legends. The outer park is open year-round, while access to the castle itself, its inner courtyard, and the moat is available during guided tours and Explor Games from July 5 to August 31. These interactive experiences allow visitors to discover the castle and its history in an engaging way.
