Discover more about Maison Natale de Pierre Corneille

The Maison Natale de Pierre Corneille, located at 4 Rue de la Pie in Rouen, is a museum dedicated to the life and works of the renowned French playwright Pierre Corneille. Born here in 1606, Corneille resided in this house for 56 years, penning some of his most famous plays, including 'Le Cid'. The house itself is a typical Norman dwelling, featuring half-timbered walls and slate cladding, offering visitors a glimpse into 17th-century domestic life. Inside, the museum recreates Corneille's study with period furniture, including his authentic ebony writing desk. A scale model of the Place du Vieux Marché depicts the neighborhood as it appeared in Corneille's time. Corneille's family had a secondary residence in Petit-Couronne, but he spent much of his time in this Rouen home. In 1683, he sold the house to provide for his daughter. The house eventually fell into disrepair and was nearly demolished. However, in 1906, a committee purchased the house to honor the tricentennial of Corneille's birth and donated it to the city of Rouen, which restored it. The Maison Natale de Pierre Corneille is currently closed for renovations and is expected to reopen in mid-2025.
