The Annonciade Museum, located in a former 16th-century chapel (Chapelle Notre-Dame de l'Annonciade), stands as a testament to Saint-Tropez's vibrant artistic history. The chapel, built around 1510, was once used by a brotherhood dedicated to redeeming local sailors captured by Barbary pirates. It later served as a marine construction workshop before its transformation into a museum. Founded in 1922, the Musée de l'Annonciade is a reminder that Saint-Tropez was one of the most active centers of avant-garde painting in the early 20th century. This was largely thanks to Paul Signac, who first visited in 1892 and was captivated by the area's light and landscapes. Signac's presence drew other artists, including Henri Matisse, André Derain and Albert Marquet, turning the town into an artistic hub. The museum's collection spans from 1890 to 1950, featuring works from the Pointillist, Nabis, and Fauvist movements. Visitors can admire masterpieces by Signac, Matisse, Bonnard, Derain and others, all inspired by the unique colors and atmosphere of Saint-Tropez. The building itself was renovated between 1951 and 1955 by architect Louis Süe to accommodate its museological function. The museum opened on August 7, 1955.
