Discover more about Le Platane

Le Platane, a venerable plane tree, graces the Quai de la Bruche in Strasbourg's enchanting Petite France district. Planted in 1667, during the reign of Louis XIV, this tree has witnessed centuries of Strasbourg's history unfold. Its impressive trunk and wide-spreading canopy make it a prominent feature of the waterfront, drawing admiration from locals and tourists alike. Known as one of the oldest trees in Strasbourg, Le Platane stands as a living monument. Originally, a walnut tree stood in its place, but it succumbed to a harsh winter in 1704. The plane tree, with its maple-like leaves, has since become a symbol of the area. The Quai de la Bruche itself has historical significance, once called Wasserzoll, where taxes were levied on goods entering Strasbourg by water. In the 19th century, a platform was built around the tree, where people gathered and danced. Today, Le Platane provides a scenic backdrop for leisurely strolls and a shaded resting spot along the canal. Several restaurants are located nearby, offering beautiful views of the tree and the surrounding Petite France.
