Parc de l'Orangerie, a sprawling 26-hectare park in Strasbourg, has been a favorite of locals since the 18th century. Its history traces back to the 17th century, with the park initially serving as a training ground for army horses. Later, it was transformed into a French-style garden, and it received orange trees from the Château de Bouxwiller during the French Revolution, hence the name.
The park's design evolved over time, incorporating English-style landscaping with winding paths and untamed plantings. The Joséphine Pavilion, built in 1807, once housed a collection of orange trees and was dedicated to Empress Joséphine, Napoleon Bonaparte's wife. Although the original orange trees are gone, the rebuilt pavilion hosts exhibitions and events.
Today, Parc de l'Orangerie offers a variety of attractions, including a lake with boat rentals, a mini-zoo, playgrounds, and walking paths. The park also features several works of art and remarkable buildings, such as the Buerehiesel, a relocated Alsatian farmhouse that now houses a restaurant.
