Discover more about Pl. du Marché Gayot

Place du Marché Gayot, nestled in the heart of Strasbourg's historic district, offers a delightful escape from the city's bustle. This charming square, located just behind the iconic Strasbourg Cathedral, is a favorite among locals and visitors for its lively atmosphere and diverse culinary scene. Originally established in 1769 by François Marie de Gayot, the square was intended to be a market for herbs and poultry, replacing the canonical residence of Brunswick that had been partially destroyed by fire. Over time, houses, shops, and inns sprung up around the square, including some picturesque half-timbered buildings that still stand today. Legend has it that some of these houses with very low doors were once used to house the dwarves, madmen, and fools employed by the episcopal court. Throughout its history, Place du Marché Gayot has served various purposes, including a meat market with its own covered hall. However, it eventually fell into disuse and was transformed into a parking lot. In recent years, the square has been revitalized and returned to its former glory, becoming a pedestrian zone filled with restaurants, cafes, and terraces. Today, Place du Marché Gayot is a popular meeting place for young people and students, who gather to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and the diverse selection of dining options. The square also features a unique sculpture by Daniel Pontoreau, representing an enigmatic meteorite fallen from the sky.
