Place Kléber: Strasbourg's Central Hub

Place Kléber, the largest square in Strasbourg, serves as the city's central hub, pulsating with life and activity. Named in 1840 after Jean-Baptiste Kléber, a Strasbourg-born general who served during the French Revolutionary Wars, the square has a rich history, dating back to the 14th century when it was a central meeting point. The square is home to the statue of General Kléber, beneath which his remains are interred. Notable buildings surround the square, including the Aubette, an 18th-century structure that once housed military barracks and now serves as a cultural center. The Aubette stands out with its classic façade. Place Kléber is a venue for various cultural events, markets, and gatherings throughout the year. During the Christmas season, it transforms into a winter wonderland, hosting part of Strasbourg's famous Christmas Market (Christkindelsmärik), dating back to 1570. The square features a towering Christmas tree, drawing visitors from around the world. Throughout its history, Place Kléber has been known by different names, including Barfüsserplatz (Square of the Barefoot Nuns) and Waffenplatz (Arms Square). The square has been remodeled several times, with the most recent restructuring in 2007. Today, Place Kléber is a pedestrian-friendly zone (with the exception of the tramway), making it a popular meeting place.
