Discover more about Chaos Montpellier

The Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux, a sprawling 120-hectare (297-acre) blockfield, sits majestically on the southern edge of the Causse Noir, overlooking the Gorges de la Dourbie. Located within the commune of La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite, this site presents a remarkable landscape of dolomite rocks sculpted by millions of years of geological activity. Often referred to as 'Lou Clapas Viel' (the Old Heap of Stones), the Chaos evokes the appearance of a ruined city reclaimed by nature. The name 'Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux' was given by the speleologist Édouard Martel in the late 19th century, distinguishing it from the city of Montpellier. The area was formed roughly 170 million years ago when a shallow sea covered the region. The skeletons of marine organisms accumulated on the seabed, forming dolomite limestone. Tectonic shifts around 100 million years ago elevated these rocks, creating the Causses plateaus. Over time, fractures in the rock were widened by ice and rain, shaping the unique landscape visitors can explore today. Visitors can explore the Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux via five marked trails, ranging from 30 minutes to two hours. A small tourist train also offers a leisurely way to experience the site.
