Discover more about Grotte de Castelbouc

The Grotte de Castelbouc, a classic site in the Gorges du Tarn, invites you to explore a world sculpted by water over millennia. Located a mere 10 minutes from Sainte-Enimie, near the village of Castelbouc, this cave presents a remarkable introduction to horizontal caving. Inside, you'll discover vast chambers, sandy beaches, and an underground lake, all connected by easy-to-navigate passages. The cave is adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, fistulas, and other concretions formed over time in the limestone of the Grands Causses. Some areas even contain fossils, including sea urchins and ammonites, dating back to the Jurassic period. For a more in-depth experience, longer tours are available, involving ascending handrails, clay areas, and descents leading to a block chaos and wider sandy beaches near the underground lake. The cave's history is also notable, with evidence of dinosaur footprints on the ceiling of a large underground chamber. These unique prints, some of the first discovered in a deep natural cavity, were left by some of the largest dinosaurs to roam the earth. The village of Castelbouc itself is worth exploring, featuring a semi-troglodytic design with ancient houses and narrow paved streets. The ruins of a medieval castle overlook the village, offering exceptional views of the area.
