Discover more about Piédestal de Fontaneilles

Perched atop the Puech de Fontaneilles, the Piédestal de Fontaneilles offers visitors a unique blend of historical intrigue and breathtaking scenery. In 1890, three local priests envisioned a colossal statue of the Virgin Mary gracing the landscape, visible from miles across the Causses and Lévezou. Funds were raised, and villagers volunteered to construct an access path while masons erected the pedestal itself. However, the statue, commissioned from Belgium, never arrived, leaving the pedestal bare. Whether due to fraud, deceit, or misappropriation, the reasons remain shrouded in mystery. For decades, the unfinished pedestal stood as a silent reminder of the unrealized ambition. In 1973, a simple cross was placed atop the structure, said to be visible from eighty surrounding communities. Today, visitors can ascend the pedestal via a recently added spiral staircase (2023) and enjoy unparalleled views of the Tarn Valley, the village of Rivière-sur-Tarn, and the surrounding landscape. The site is accessible via a short hike from a nearby parking area, making it a popular destination for those seeking both natural beauty and a touch of historical mystery. The area is also known for its diverse birdlife, including vultures.
