The original basilica was established in the 5th century, but it was destroyed during the French Revolution. The present basilica, constructed between 1886 and 1924 in a Neo-Byzantine style by French architect Victor Laloux, incorporates limestone, granite, and marble. The basilica was consecrated on July 4, 1925. The basilica's north-south orientation breaks from the traditional east-west direction of the former collegiate church.
