Discover more about Bois de la Chaise

Nestled on the northeastern edge of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, the Bois de la Chaise is a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical charm. This 110-hectare forest is characterized by its lush and diverse vegetation, including green oaks, strawberry trees, maritime pines, and mimosas, creating a unique Mediterranean atmosphere. Classified as a protected site since 1936, the Bois de la Chaise offers visitors a serene escape with its stunning coastal paths and idyllic beaches. The forest's history is as rich as its landscape. The area has been shaped by various events, including being cut down by the Spanish in 1524 and the Dutch in 1674. In 1793, the Vendée and Republican armies used the wood for firewood during a harsh winter. Later, the Jacobsen family, who owned much of the land, planted pine trees and divided the area into plots. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the construction of over 100 villas by the island's notables, marking the beginning of its era as a tourist destination. The Bois de la Chaise is home to several notable spots, including the Plage des Dames with its iconic white beach huts and pier, the Pointe de Saint-Pierre, the Anse Rouge lighthouse, and the family-friendly Plage des Sableaux. The Plage des Dames is particularly famous for its historic beach huts, which were used by ladies changing into their bathing suits during the rise of sea bathing in the 19th century. The painter Auguste Renoir visited Noirmoutier in 1892 and was captivated by the Bois de la Chaise, declaring it "a wonderful place, as beautiful as the South of France but with a sea that is much more beautiful than the Mediterranean". Today, visitors can explore the forest's trails, relax on its beaches, and admire the blend of nature and architecture that makes the Bois de la Chaise a truly special place.
