Discover more about Château de la Guignardière

Château de la Guignardière, located in Avrillé, Vendée, is a testament to the architectural ambitions of the French Renaissance. Construction began around 1555 for Jean Girard, a breadmaster to King Henri II, with plans for a grand, symmetrical design. However, Girard's assassination in 1563 led to the project's abandonment, leaving the castle incomplete and its master masons scattered throughout the region. In the 18th century, Sylvestre, Count of Chaffault, attempted to revive the project, adding Ionic pilasters and a pediment adorned with his coat of arms. The French Revolution brought further turmoil as a republican mob plundered the château, damaging its armorial bearings. Despite its unfinished state, the castle stands as a classified historical monument, celebrated for its unique architecture and historical significance. Today, Château de la Guignardière is also known as 'Le Château des Aventuriers' (The Adventurers' Castle), offering a variety of activities within its 86-hectare park. Visitors can explore the castle's interior, including the courtyard, library, billiard room, dining room, grand staircase, and the King's bedroom. The park features themed adventures such as a pirate route, a dinosaur trail, and inflatable slides, making it a popular destination for families. Interactive tablet-based games, like 'Enquête au Château,' provide a fun and educational way to discover the castle's history.
