Discover more about Vendée Vitrail

Vendée Vitrail, located in the heart of Mortagne-sur-Sèvre, is a unique cultural attraction dedicated to the art of stained glass. Situated within the restored Saint-Hilaire church, this museum offers visitors an interactive and educational experience, showcasing the history, creation, and significance of stained glass. The centerpiece of Vendée Vitrail is the magnificent stained glass window by Louis Mazetier, a master glassmaker from the Vendée region. Created in 1937, this impressive work of art stands nearly 10 meters tall and weighs over four tons. Originally intended for Notre-Dame de Paris, it was stored away during World War II and eventually found its home in Mortagne-sur-Sèvre. The museum uses light and sound projections to animate the stained glass, creating an immersive spectacle for visitors. Visitors can explore the different stages of stained glass creation, decipher the messages conveyed through the art form, and discover the work of local Vendée glassmakers. Interactive exhibits, including optical theaters and digital displays, cater to both children and adults. Vendée Vitrail also hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops, and guided tours throughout the year. The Saint-Hilaire church itself has an interesting history. Built in 1904, it fell into disrepair and closed in 2007. It was restored in 2016 to house the Vendée Vitrail project, which officially opened in 2018.
