Vouvant: A Medieval Gem in the Vendée

Vouvant, a designated 'Petite Cité de Caractère' and one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in France' since 1988, invites visitors to step back in time within its medieval walls. Perched on a rocky spur in the heart of the Mervent-Vouvant forest, this Vendée village boasts a captivating blend of history, legend, and natural beauty. The village owes its origins to Guillaume the Great, Duke of Aquitaine, who in the early 11th century, recognized the strategic advantage of this location and established a castle and monastery. Legend attributes the construction of the Mélusine Tower to the fairy Mélusine, who is said to have built it in a single night.
