Discover more about Châteauneuf-lès-Moustiers

Châteauneuf-lès-Moustiers, a ghost village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, offers a poignant journey into the past. Perched on a hill overlooking the Baou Valley, the village was inhabited from around the year 1000, with the construction of a new castle documented at that time. By the beginning of the 19th century, the population had grown to around 600. However, a combination of factors led to its abandonment in the early 20th century. The village's decline was caused by its isolation, lack of water, and famine. The First World War dealt a final blow, with twenty men never returning, leading the remaining villagers to settle in the plains near available springs. Today, the roofless stone walls and collapsed church ceiling stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. Exploring the ruins offers a unique perspective on the Verdon hinterland, though caution is advised due to the unstable masonry. A walking trail allows you to discover the heritage and history of this abandoned village. The site is accessible via a 30-minute walk from Le Plan, following an ancient Roman road.
