Rising dramatically above the town of Castellane, the Notre-Dame du Roc chapel has been a sentinel and a sanctuary for centuries. The chapel's origins are debated, with some historians tracing it back to the 9th or 11th century, while the oldest parts of the current structure date to the 12th century. It was likely associated with the castle of Aldebert I and served the baron and inhabitants of the fort. The chapel's history is marked by periods of destruction and rebuilding. It was reportedly rebuilt in 1590 after damage inflicted by the Huguenots, who left part of the apse and most of the southern wall standing. In 1663, it briefly housed a convent, but the monks relocated due to the site's isolation. The chapel fell into ruin again by 1703, leading to reconstruction efforts in 1775. Further restoration occurred in 1861. Today, visitors can ascend to Notre-Dame du Roc via a winding path that offers increasingly impressive views. The interior provides a serene space for reflection, while outside, two orientation tables help visitors identify landmarks in the breathtaking panorama. The site remains a place of pilgrimage, with a particularly notable torchlight procession on the evening of August 14. Exploring the chapel and its surroundings provides a rewarding glimpse into Castellane's rich history and enduring spiritual heritage.
