Discover more about Agoudas Hakehilos Synagogue

Located at 10 Rue Pavée in the 4th arrondissement, the Agoudas Hakehilos Synagogue is a striking example of Art Nouveau architecture in the heart of Paris's historic Le Marais district. Constructed between 1913 and 1914, it was commissioned by the Agoudas Hakehilos, a society of Orthodox Jews primarily from Russia, as a modern place of worship. The synagogue is the only religious building designed by Hector Guimard, who is better known for his Art Nouveau designs for the Paris Metro. Built on a narrow plot, the synagogue's design emphasizes height, with elongated windows and columns creating a sense of verticality. The facade is made of white stone, and the structure incorporates reinforced concrete. Inside, two levels of galleries line the nave, and a large glass window at the back provides natural light, supplemented by skylights. Guimard also designed the furnishings, including light fixtures, benches, and railings, featuring stylized vegetal motifs and the recurring triangle symbol. The synagogue has witnessed significant historical events. In 1934, a gas explosion damaged the main hall, which was subsequently rebuilt. During World War II, it was targeted by Nazi collaborators but was spared from destruction. The building was registered as a monument historique in 1989 and remains a functional synagogue today, led by Rav Moredekhai Rottenberg. Visitors can explore the rich liturgical world and admire the unique architecture.
