Discover more about Le Bateau-Lavoir

Le Bateau-Lavoir, located at 13 Place Émile Goudeau in Montmartre, Paris, is more than just a building; it's a symbol of artistic innovation and community. Its name, meaning "laundry boat," comes from its resemblance to the washing boats on the Seine or perhaps the artists' drying clothes, and the way the building creaked in the wind. Originally a piano factory in the 19th century, it was transformed into artist studios in 1889, becoming a melting pot for artists seeking affordable living and working spaces. In 1892, painter Maxime Maufra was the first artist to take up residence here. Soon after, it attracted artists from all over the world. Notably, Pablo Picasso resided here from 1904 to 1909 and painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon in his studio in 1907, a work considered the first painting of modern art. Other famous residents included Amedeo Modigliani, Juan Gris, and Guillaume Apollinaire. In 1970, a fire destroyed much of the building, leaving only the facade. It was completely rebuilt in 1978, and today it houses 25 artist workshops, continuing its legacy as a space for creativity. While access may be limited to appointments, the building's exterior and the surrounding Place Émile Goudeau offer a glimpse into Montmartre's artistic soul.
