Discover more about Musée Marmottan Monet

The Musée Marmottan Monet, located in a tranquil, upscale neighborhood in Paris' 16th arrondissement, offers an intimate and captivating experience of Impressionist art. Housed in a building that began as a hunting lodge for the Duke of Valmy and later transformed into a private mansion by Jules Marmottan, the museum's history is as rich as its collection. Paul Marmottan, Jules' son, bequeathed the mansion and its art collection to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1932, establishing the Musée Marmottan in 1934. The museum's fame grew significantly in 1966 when Michel Monet, Claude Monet's son, bequeathed his collection of his father's paintings, making the Musée Marmottan home to the world's largest collection of Claude Monet's works. This includes over 100 pieces, from early caricatures to the famed water lilies of Giverny. A highlight is 'Impression, Sunrise' (1872), the painting that gave the Impressionist movement its name. The Musée Marmottan also features works by other Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, such as Berthe Morisot, Edgar Degas, and Paul Gauguin. The museum's collection extends beyond Impressionism, with a collection of art and furniture from the First Empire. The Musée Marmottan Monet provides a unique opportunity to explore Impressionism in a serene and personal setting.
