Discover more about Place du Châtelet

Place du Châtelet is a historic public square in Paris, situated on the right bank of the Seine River. It stands on the former site of the Grand Châtelet fortress, which was constructed around 1130 by King Louis VI. This fortress served as a defense for the Île de la Cité, later becoming a courthouse, prison, and administrative center. In the early 19th century, Napoleon I ordered the demolition of the Grand Châtelet in 1802, transforming the area into the Place du Châtelet. The square was designed by architect Jacques Hittorff and completed in 1808 as part of Napoleon's vision for grand public spaces. At the center of the square stands the Fontaine du Palmier, also known as the Victory Column, erected between 1806 and 1808 to commemorate Napoleon's military victories. The column is topped with a gilded statue of Victory and adorned with sphinxes symbolizing the Egyptian campaign. Flanking the square are two Italian Renaissance-inspired theaters, designed by architect Davioud in 1862: the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Théâtre de la Ville. The Théâtre du Châtelet hosts musicals, operas, classical music concerts, and dance shows, while the Théâtre de la Ville is dedicated to contemporary dance and world music. Place du Châtelet is a lively square with brasseries and is near the Square de la Tour Saint-Jacques. The square is designed to be accessible to all visitors, with pedestrianization enhancing accessibility.
