Discover more about Pont de Grenelle

The Pont de Grenelle-Cadets de Saumur, commonly known as Pont de Grenelle, is a vital Parisian bridge connecting the 15th and 16th arrondissements. Built between 1966 and 1968, it replaced earlier structures that had stood since 1827, reflecting Paris's evolving engineering and aesthetic sensibilities. The bridge spans the Seine River, meeting the Île aux Cygnes at its tip. The current steel bridge, designed by engineers Thenault, Grattesat, and Pilon, along with architects Chauvel, Creuzot, and Jabouille, stretches 220 meters in length and 30 meters in width. It features two main spans of 85 meters each and a 20-meter span over the Île aux Cygnes. This central island is home to a bronze replica of the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the American community in Paris in 1889. The statue, facing west, commemorates the alliance between France and the United States. The bridge's history is marked by several iterations. The first bridge, constructed in 1827, was a wooden structure that eventually collapsed due to heavy traffic. It was replaced in 1874 by a cast iron bridge, which was damaged during World War I. The current bridge was constructed to accommodate increased road and river traffic. Today, the Pont de Grenelle offers panoramic views of the Seine, the Eiffel Tower, and the Radio France building. It is a popular spot for leisurely walks and photography, providing a unique perspective on the city's landmarks. The bridge was renamed in 2016 to honor the Cadets de Saumur, military students who defended the Loire region during World War II.
