Square Jean XXIII, named after Pope John XXIII, is a serene city park located on the Île de la Cité, offering visitors a tranquil escape next to the Notre Dame Cathedral. Originally part of the Archbishop's Palace garden, the palace was destroyed in 1831 during the French Revolution. The square was redesigned and opened to the public in 1844, becoming the first public district garden in Paris. The garden provides picturesque views of Notre Dame's South Rose Window, flying buttresses, and spire. The neo-Gothic Fountain of the Virgin, designed in 1845, stands behind the cathedral, blending seamlessly with its architectural style. The square also features a bronze statue of Pope John Paul II, erected in 2014. Visitors can enjoy well-maintained lawns, vibrant flower beds, and diverse trees, including cherry trees, yews, and a Hungarian Oak planted in honor of Archbishop Denis-Auguste Affre. Benches are available for relaxation and enjoying the scenery. The park is open from approximately 9 am to 6 pm, with extended hours during certain times of the year.
