Discover more about Star Grove

The Star Grove, originally laid out in 1666, derives its name from its intricate, star-like design, one of the most complex in the Versailles gardens. Envisioned as a secluded garden, it was accessed via four pathways meeting at the corners of the surrounding wooded area. These paths led to a circular walkway, which then guided visitors inward via serpentine paths to a pentagonal route, ultimately arriving at the grove's center, originally adorned with a pool. In 1671, the grove was enhanced with a large rock feature, leading to its temporary renaming as the Water Mountain Grove. However, by the early 18th century, the design was simplified, and the pool was removed. Recent restoration efforts have partially revived André Le Nôtre's original vision, reinstating the circular and serpentine paths. Today, the heart of the grove is a lawn, offering a peaceful respite. Once a venue for lavish afternoon teas hosted by Louis XIV, the Star Grove provided a secluded setting for entertainment and relaxation. Today, it remains a testament to the evolution of garden design and offers visitors a serene experience within the expansive Versailles grounds.
