Discover more about Théâtre des Abbesses

The Théâtre des Abbesses, situated at 31 Rue des Abbesses in Paris's 18th arrondissement, is a vibrant cultural venue closely linked to the Théâtre de la Ville. Since 1996, it has served as the second venue managed by the Théâtre de la Ville, offering a diverse program of contemporary dance, world music, and classical music. The theater's history is rooted in the rehabilitation of a former commercial site, which included butchers and poultry shops. In 1986, the city of Paris entrusted Belgian architect Charles Vandenhove, along with Jacques Sequaris and Prudent de Wispelaere, with the task of transforming the site into a municipal theater, while also incorporating social housing and a crèche. The architectural style, completed in 1996, is a rare example of postmodern neoclassicism in France, drawing inspiration from 19th-century design. The design aimed to respect the area's existing aesthetics and avoid obstructing views of the Bateau-Lavoir, a historic artist residence, located on the Montmartre hill. The theater has a seating capacity of 420. Its location is easily accessible via the Abbesses metro station (line 12). The facade of the theater includes columns with quotes from artists.
