Ballon d'Alsace Travel Guide

Rising to 1,247 meters, the Ballon d'Alsace is a prominent peak in the southern Vosges mountains, marking the convergence of Alsace, Lorraine, and Franche-Comté. Its rounded summit provides expansive views, encompassing the Black Forest to the east, the Jura Mountains, and, on clear days, the Swiss Alps, including Mont Blanc, to the south.The mountain's name has two possible origins: either from "Bel," a Celtic sun god, or from "Beleben," the German name for the Eurasian coot. Historically, the Ballon d'Alsace was also known as the "Ballon de Lorraine". The area is steeped in history, having served as a border between France and Germany from 1871 to 1918. Remnants of trenches from World War I and boundary markers are still visible. The Monument des Démineurs, inaugurated in 1952, pays tribute to those who perished while clearing mines after the wars.Today, the Ballon d'Alsace is a popular destination for outdoor activities. Hiking trails, including the GR5, traverse the mountain, leading to scenic spots like Lac des Perches. The climb is also known as a historic route of the Tour de France. In winter, it transforms into a ski resort with both downhill and cross-country options. An Acropark and other adventure activities are available at the Gentiane sector.
