Cascade du Wasserfall: A Hidden Gem in Sewen
Panoramic peak in the Vosges with hiking, skiing, and historical significance at the meeting point of three French regions.
The Ballon d'Alsace, a rounded peak in the Southern Vosges mountains, offers panoramic views and a rich history. Straddling the regions of Alsace, Lorraine, and Franche-Comté, the summit provides vistas stretching to the Black Forest and the Alps. It's a haven for hikers and cyclists in summer and a popular ski destination in winter.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Driving
From Belfort, take the A36 motorway to exit 13, following signs for 'Ballon d'Alsace'. Drive through Sermamagny, Chaux, Giromagny and Lepuix on the RD465. From Mulhouse, take the A36 to exit 15 towards Masevaux, then follow the RD466 to Masevaux. From St-Maurice-sur-Moselle, take the D486. Be aware that roads, particularly from Masevaux and Giromagny, may require snow chains or winter tires. Parking is available in several free lots near the summit, including those at La Gentiane, Langenberg, and Tête des Redoutes. During peak season, arrive early as parking fills up quickly.
Public Transport
While direct public transport to the Ballon d'Alsace is limited, a 'Bus des Neiges' operates from Le Thillot, with stops in Fresse-sur-Moselle and Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle, to the ski station. The fare is €1 per trip, free for children under 10. From Strasbourg, take a train to Mulhouse, then a bus to a connecting point. From the bus stop in Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle to Ballon d'Alsace, consider local taxi services for the final ascent, with fares approximately €20-€30.
