Lac de Lispach: A Peat Bog Lake in the Vosges

Lac de Lispach is a charming lake nestled in the Vosges Mountains, near the town of La Bresse in the Grand Est region of France. This 10-hectare lake sits at an altitude of 909 meters and is known for its distinctive peat bog, which is dry on the upstream side and wet or submerged on the downstream side. This unique environment supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. The lake was formed by glacial activity and is fed by the Chajoux River, a tributary of the Moselotte. A well-maintained, easy trail loops around the lake, providing a pleasant 1.8 to 3 km walk for visitors of all ages. Along the path, educational panels offer insights into the formation and life of peat bogs, as well as the local flora. Keep an eye out for the protected insectivorous plant, Droséra, along the lake shore. While swimming is prohibited to protect the delicate ecosystem, fishing is allowed from May 1st to November 1st, subject to certain regulations. In winter, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, offering opportunities for snowshoeing around the frozen lake. The surrounding area also offers a variety of hiking trails, including a path to the old copper mine and routes connecting to other lakes like Lac de Longemer.
