Lac des Corbeaux: A Jewel of the Vosges Mountains

Lac des Corbeaux (Lake of the Crows) is a stunning glacial lake situated at an altitude of 887 meters in the Vosges Mountains, near the commune of La Bresse, France. Covering an area of 9 hectares, this natural gem is a haven for those seeking tranquility and outdoor adventures. The lake's name, while evocative, has less to do with crows and more to do with the landscape. One theory suggests the name comes from the dark color of the water, reflecting the surrounding somber pine forests. A more plausible explanation points to the old French word "courbées" (curved), describing the steep, curved relief surrounding the lake. Over time, "Lac des Courbées" transformed into "Lac des Corbeaux". Formed over 10,000 years ago by glacial activity, Lac des Corbeaux has also been partially modified to produce electricity. In the early 20th century, a dam and siphons were installed to power a hydroelectric plant in La Vertbruche, showcasing a blend of natural beauty and practical engineering. Today, Lac des Corbeaux is a popular destination for hiking, fishing, and picnicking. A well-maintained path encircles the lake, offering an easy and idyllic walk suitable for families. For a more challenging hike, visitors can venture to La Roche du Lac, a nearby lookout point providing a bird's-eye view of the lake and surrounding region. Swimming is not supervised. In winter, the road to the lake is often closed due to slippery conditions, but the area transforms into a snowy landscape perfect for skiing and snowshoeing.
