Although it is currently uninhabited, Tikei remains part of the commune of Takaroa and offers a glimpse into traditional Polynesian life. The clear waters surrounding Tikei are ideal for snorkeling and diving, revealing vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life.The island's history includes visits from Dutch mariner Jacob Roggeveen in 1722, who named it Carlshoff, and Russian mariner Otto von Kotzebue in 1816, who named it Romanzov.
