Land tour but doesn't mean you will stay dry

We took this tour mostly for the Taputapuatea Marae UNESCO site, culturally a must see. As for the tour operator, there are many other choices that include this stop. Our tour was riding on the back of an old 4x4 pickup truck with a canopy. The ride is what you can expect riding in back of a pickup truck. It rained on the latter part of the tour. With wind blowing, all of us got wet despite the canopy. It wasn't until the driver saw us struggling to put on our rain poncho did he stop to put down the side rain curtains. He was surprised none of us complained about getting wet. We've got to be the most mellow group he has taken because nobody said anything, even the old lady sitting at the back getting drenched.

We did not have an excursion planned, because we really weren't fans of the cruise group tours. We wanted something more individual. We saw a tip on Trip Advisor this morning that shared going to the local tourist info spot for last-minute excursions. From the moment we met Cathy, we found her special. She offered us a reasonable deal for a trip for 2 and off we went. While the air-conditioned van pleased my husband, Cathy's delight in sharing the wonders of her island was magic for me. She took us the places we wanted to go and gifted us with many extras- a prayer and a song at an ancestral spot, additional items of interest and more information than I could possible process. I loved it all. She is also a local artisan with beautiful jewelry and has a unique perspective of the island based on her generational heritage. Ask her about Don Ho.
