Discover more about Cook's Bay

Cook's Bay, cradled on the northern coast of Moorea, is a sight to behold, offering a mesmerizing blend of verdant mountains and serene, turquoise waters. Often called Paopao Bay due to its proximity to the island's largest village, it is one of the two principal bays that define Moorea's unique charm. Interestingly, the bay's name is somewhat of a misnomer. Captain James Cook, the famed British explorer, never actually anchored here. During his voyages, including his third in 1777, he chose to anchor in the neighboring Opunohu Bay. Nevertheless, Cook's Bay was later named in his honor, commemorating his exploration of the region. Today, Cook's Bay is a vibrant destination dotted with shops, hotels, and restaurants along its shoreline. The bay serves as a gateway to numerous activities, from swimming and snorkeling in its clear, shallow waters to exploring the lush landscapes via hiking trails. Visitors can explore Paopao Village, take scenic drives along Route des Ananas (Pineapple Road), or visit the Richard B. Gump South Pacific Research Station. The Cook's Bay Hotel & Suites, rebuilt in 2023, offers a luxurious stay with panoramic views.
