Dandalo Bridge: A Testament to Medieval Georgian Engineering

Nestled in the picturesque Acharistsqali River Valley, approximately 60 kilometers east of Batumi, lies the Dandalo Bridge, a stunning example of medieval Georgian architecture. This ancient stone bridge, recognized as an Immovable Cultural Monument of National Significance since 2006, offers visitors a glimpse into the country's rich history and engineering prowess. Constructed between the 9th and 10th centuries, the Dandalo Bridge is made from local limestone and mortar, showcasing the resourcefulness of its builders. The bridge stretches almost 36 meters in length and is notable for its distinctive S-shape, resembling the Latin letter 'S'. This unique design presented a significant engineering challenge, requiring careful distribution of weight to ensure the structure's stability. The bridge's right abutment is built on a cliff, while the left abutment is partially submerged in the river. The arch thickness measures almost a full meter, and from the middle of the bridge, the river flows 8.5 meters below. Two rows of holes, spaced 38 centimeters apart, are visible on both sides of the arch, indicating the scaffolding used during its construction. Today, the Dandalo Bridge stands as a testament to Georgia's enduring architectural heritage. Visitors can appreciate the bridge's intricate design, admire the scenic river valley, and even enjoy a relaxing picnic in the surrounding area.
