Getting There

    From Stepantsminda, taxis are readily available in the central square. Negotiate a round-trip fare to the Gveleti Waterfall trailhead; expect to pay around 50 GEL. The driver can drop you off and wait, or return at an agreed-upon time. The ride to the trailhead is approximately 15 minutes.

  • Walking

    It is approximately 7km from Stepantsminda to Gveleti Waterfall. From the center of Stepantsminda, follow the main road north towards the Georgian-Russian border. After about 7km, look for a signposted dirt road on the left, marking the turnoff to Gveleti Waterfall. Follow the dirt road for about 1km until you reach the trailhead. The walk from Stepantsminda to the trailhead will take approximately 1.5 - 2 hours.

Gveleti Waterfall, also known as Gveleti Waterfalls, is a must-see destination for nature lovers visiting the Kazbegi region of Georgia. Situated in the Dariali Gorge, approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) north of Stepantsminda, the waterfall offers a refreshing escape into the heart of the Caucasus Mountains. The name 'Gveleti' translates to 'place of snakes', so be mindful of the wildlife in the area. The hike to Gveleti Waterfall is relatively easy, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors. The trail winds through a picturesque valley, with the sound of rushing water growing louder as you approach your destination. The main waterfall is about 30 meters (98 feet) high and 4 meters wide. There is also a smaller waterfall nearby. The area is particularly beautiful from August to October when the surrounding flora is in full bloom. To reach the falls, follow the main road north from Stepantsminda. A signposted dirt road will lead you past abandoned cabins. After about 800 meters (0.5 miles), the road forks; take the right branch, indicated by a stone with a red arrow. Cross a small bridge, and a short, sometimes steep path will bring you to the main waterfall.
