Uplistsikhe: An Ancient Cave City

Uplistsikhe, meaning 'Lord's Fortress,' is an ancient cave city in Georgia, located 10 km east of Gori on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. Carved into the sandstone cliffs of the Kvernaki mountain range, this remarkable site dates back to the early Iron Age, around the 6th century BC. Uplistsikhe was an important religious, commercial, and strategic center in the Kingdom of Kartli, playing a significant role through the Antique, Hellenistic, and Late Neolithic periods. As you explore Uplistsikhe, you'll discover a unique blend of pagan and Christian architectural styles. The city features rock-cut streets, dwellings, temples, palaces, and even a secret tunnel leading to the Mtkvari River. Among the notable structures are the remains of a three-nave basilica and the early medieval 'crown-prince' church, built upon a former heathen temple.
