Overview
The Colchis Fountain, situated in Kutaisi's central square, is a captivating monument that pays homage to the ancient Kingdom of Colchis. Created in 2011 by Georgian architect David Gogichaishvili, the fountain has become a symbol of the city, blending history and art.The fountain features 30 large-scale replicas of gold jewelry and bronze statues discovered at archaeological sites around Georgia, including nearby Vani. These figures offer a glimpse into the wealth and artistry of the Colchian civilization, which flourished in western Georgia from the 13th to the 1st centuries BC. The sculptures include animals that were sacred to the Colchians, such as lions, rams, tigers, and deer. One of the most recognizable figures is the lion, which also appears on the 5-lari banknote and the logo of a prominent Georgian bank.During the day, the fountain's gold surfaces and blue mosaics shimmer in the sunlight, creating a dazzling spectacle. At night, the fountain is illuminated, adding a mystical aura to the scene. The Colchis Fountain is more than just a beautiful landmark; it's a place where locals and tourists gather, and events are often held. The fountain is surrounded by cafes and restaurants where visitors can enjoy traditional Georgian cuisine while taking in the view.
