    Discover more about Mgvimevi convent

Mgvimevi Convent, also known as Mgvimevi Monastery, is a remarkable testament to Georgia's rich religious and architectural heritage. Located near the town of Chiatura in the Imereti region, this active nunnery dates back to the 13th century, during the reign of Queen Tamar, a period known as the Golden Age of Georgia. The convent's most striking feature is its integration with the natural cave formations. The complex includes a two-aisled basilica, adorned with traditional Georgian ornamentation and supported by grand columns. Adjacent to the temple lies the Mgvimevi cave, where significant religious ceremonies are held. A smaller hall church within the complex features a ceiling and west wall composed of natural rock, adding to the site's unique character. Frescoes, though in poor condition, can be found inside. The main temple, dedicated to the Savior, is a two-nave basilica with arches supported by massive columns. The facade boasts luxurious carvings, including crosses and rhombuses. Inside, you'll find frescoes depicting Rati, the founder of the monastery, his wife, and brother. The cave itself houses the Church of St. Catherine, with a bas-relief of a ram on its eastern wall. Mgvimevi has faced numerous assaults throughout history, including attacks by Mongol-Tatar invaders. Today, the convent offers visitors a peaceful environment with stunning vistas, making it an ideal destination for spiritual enrichment and appreciation of natural beauty.
