Overview

The David Gareji Monastery, a stunning complex of medieval churches and monastic cells, is perched on the semi-desert hills of Udabno and is one of Georgia's most significant cultural treasures. Founded in the 6th century by the monk David, one of the thirteen Assyrian fathers, the monastery is an architectural marvel that harmoniously blends with the surrounding landscape. Visitors are often captivated by the frescoes that adorn the walls of the churches, depicting biblical scenes and the lives of saints, which reflect the artistry and spirituality of the era.One of the remarkable aspects of David Gareji is the sense of serenity that envelops the site, making it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. As you wander through the narrow corridors and explore the ancient caves, you may find yourself enveloped in the peaceful ambiance that has existed for centuries. The monastery also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, making it an ideal spot for photography and contemplation. The journey to the monastery can be as rewarding as the destination itself. The approach takes you through a diverse landscape, and for those who enjoy hiking, the trails provide stunning vistas and a chance to connect with nature.
