Discover more about Tbilisi History Museum

The Tbilisi History Museum, also known as the Ioseb Grishashvili Tbilisi Historical Museum, provides a captivating journey through the city's rich heritage. Founded in 1910 as the City Municipal Museum, it was later named in honor of the renowned Georgian poet Ioseb Grishashvili. Since 1984, the museum has been located in a beautifully restored caravanserai on Sioni Street, a historic inn that once served Silk Road traders. The museum's collection comprises over 50,000 artifacts, offering insights into Tbilisi's history, everyday life, and culture from the end of the 4th millennium BCE to today. Exhibits include archaeological finds, ethnographical materials, archival documents, and examples of folk and applied arts. Visitors can also view collections of ceramics, weaponry, musical instruments, coins, textiles, and household accessories dating back to the Bronze Age. The museum's main focus is on the modern history of the city. The exhibits largely showcase the 19th century, recreating Tbilisi of that era with large dioramas. Life-size recreations of 19th-century facades, including a restaurant, bar, and carpet store, offer visitors an immersive experience. The museum also recreates common spaces such as a teahouse adorned with smoking implements and rugs.
