Eagle Gorge Natural Monument: A Birdwatcher's Paradise

The Eagle Gorge Natural Monument, also known as Artsivi Kheoba, is a captivating destination located in the Kakheti region of Georgia, near the town of Dedoplistskaro. This unique natural complex comprises a striking limestone canyon and an adjacent forested area, creating a diverse and picturesque landscape. The gorge is part of the Vashlovani National Park, renowned for its semi-desert ecosystem and stunning views. The gorge itself is carved into a limestone cliff, showcasing dramatic rock formations and lush vegetation. The area is a haven for birdwatchers, with over sixty species of birds, including rare nesting species like the black stork and Griffon vulture. Observation decks provide excellent vantage points for spotting these magnificent birds and other wildlife. The slopes of the canyon are also home to rare and endangered plants, such as Campanula kachetica and oriental thuja, found nowhere else in Georgia. In addition to its natural beauty, Eagle Gorge boasts historical significance with the presence of the Khornabuji Fortress. Built in the 5th century, the fortress adds a cultural dimension to the site, offering visitors a glimpse into Georgia's rich past. Hiking trails wind through the gorge and forested area, catering to various skill levels and allowing visitors to explore the hidden gems of the area. The main pedestrian route is 1 km long and takes approximately 1 hour to complete. A shorter 0.5 km trail leads to the Khornabuji Fortress, taking about 30 minutes.
