Bell Mountain: A Scenic Overlook with a Colorful History

Bell Mountain, located in Hiawassee, Georgia, provides visitors with panoramic views of Lake Chatuge and the surrounding mountains. Rising to an elevation of 3,424 feet, the summit is reached via a steep, paved road, making it accessible to most vehicles. At the top, observation decks offer stunning vistas stretching into North Carolina and Tennessee on clear days. The mountain's history is as striking as its views. In 1963, three men attempted to mine the summit for minerals, leaving a large, visible scar. The mining operation failed, leaving a gaping hole that contributed to erosion and impacted the water quality of Lake Chatuge. Later, Hal Herrin, a local resident, purchased the land to preserve it from further damage. In 2016, Herrin's estate donated the 18-acre summit to Towns County, transforming it into a park and historical site. Today, Bell Mountain is a popular destination despite the graffiti covering the rocks. While some find the graffiti controversial, it has become part of the mountain's identity. The park features a paved road, parking areas, and observation decks. Visitors can enjoy eagle watching and paragliding, weather permitting. The site is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, offering free admission and parking.
